How do you know what a French Bulldog puppy should cost?

There are many factors on what a French Bulldog pup may cost you today. As a breeder in Tampa Bay for past 16+ years, I have been asked sooo many times from potential puppy homes to those having a French Bulldog either considering or attempting to become a breeder with their first litter. Looking online in 2022, I’ve seen “pros” of something telling you the price should be from 2000 to 3000. But giving no reason for the difference in price or with any qualifications as to how the person writing article knows such info. Personally, I would think a French Bulldog for those prices come with label buyer beware. Obviously things like direct costs affect the prices. #1 such as c sections, stud fees, vet costs, food, health certificate & registration like akc. #2 Bloodline is an extremely important value on a pup. Someone just starting to breed their bloodline should do a ton of testing because they don’t have any history knowledge. Healthy bloodline allows for breeder to be in business for more than the typical 2 years or less common amongst most French Bulldog breeders having to go out of business cause they aren’t prepared to stand behind their sales as state of Fl requires them for a healthy pup. #3 Costs of doing business over the long term. Things happen. You can do everything right and maybe something happens to the litter or pup. Nowadays, theft is a big deal. People want to not only see your pups but want one without paying. It happens. What can go wrong eventually finds its way into a breeders kennel no matter how careful and skilled they are. #4 Advertisement/ costs of doing business as a kennel. Site fees & advertising/ SEO/ costs of sales.Traditionally, breeders competed with puppymills, USDA certified big breeders selling to the pet stores. Nowadays a breeder is competing with conglomerate of backyard breeders disguised as a single site/ kennel name;thereby, alluding USDA (puppy mills) & private breeder/ kennels local state laws (Animal Control). You should know and see all breeder names on site/ kennel name. Conglomerate’s pup costs aren’t cheap although most participating aren’t sharing equally in funds. Guessing it’s whoever owns site is doing the best in equity :-).

Let’s sum it up. Things that make prices range for the French bulldog.

#1. Costs of everything from raising and breeding the bitch to actually having a healthy litter at least 8 weeks old ready for a new home. Microchip, supplies, vet, transportation., paperwork & food are just a few of the costs.

#2 Bloodline cost of actually getting breeding rights of an established or establishing healthy dog & or bitch litter’s health history. For the established breeder, keeping and maintaining a healthy bloodline is costly. This I know to well. Color, sex, adding new blood into your bloodline, while maintaining health & quality. Breeding for health means not breeding only for color that fetches the best price. Fad colors, wow dangerous health concerns. Sire & dams with same color such as cream ends up bleaching out & extremely bad for skin. Brindle blood I have found to be mandatory in bloodline to keep healthy, but traditionally the least expensive pups. But a factor necessary in keeping healthy.. Breeding standards that actually can effect health like obesity, smushed in flat faces are two I see frequently. Without dip in nose, it’s horrible for breathing. Obesity, we all know what to much fat does to a body.

#3 Costs of doing good business over time equals to profit & loss from year to year. French Bulldog puppies are not, repeat not easy to breed & what can go wrong will. Theft, loss of life (extremely hard mentally), supply & demand, worlds impact on kennels abilities (inflation), competing with kennels not established long enough to have had any losses yet.

#4 Knowing who or what the kennel’s breeders are, their legitimacy, their ethics and their invested participation is as important as the French bulldog itself. Will determine if price you pay is for the quality of the dog & breeder ethics vs advertisement and big business/ corporate cost of doing business. Puppy mills aren’t rolling in the money. They sell on number of pups produced & replacement of said pup. Big business “pet stores” & conglomerates are making the money because they are producing marketing abilities while escaping ethical breeding practices.

This is my Gwendolyn’s opinion in summing everything up in the prices between different French Bulldog pups. quality of pup, ethics of breeder and ability and desire to find good quality homes with a family that both pup & new owners flourish from the addition, supply and demand are all factors that make pups cost or worth different prices. Do your homework on the bloodline and breeder! A breeders reputation can make all the difference.

2022 prices

Inflation is ridiculous. Sorry to say, it has hit the dog breeding business especially hard with increases in everything from vet services to food costs a good 30%. No, we are not increasing prices 30% but do have to increase to cover costs. Prices on pups will range from $5500 to $7000 depending on costs associated with breeding to raising the litter & the pup’s characteristics & uniqueness.

2019 Spring Update

From top left to rite is Lucky, Lita, Chinka and Bellagio.

If your new to Happy Kennels or have been to busy to keep up-to-date with “As Happy Kennels Turns” we are going to provide a summary of the 2019 Spring season.

Chinka-Bug: Our lead star “Mama” is a cougar now since she has fallen head-over-paws for a younger stud. I must admit he is stunning fellow, he looks identical to our lead champion Mickey aka Travlen Spendabuck of Lyerly (brindle). This will be Chinka’s last litter, so if you’re a fan or family of Chinkas’, then you are aware of the fact Chinka’s has petite size pups. So, we’re expecting 4 petite pups with a variety of color brindle, cream, fawn and red. Her pregnancy will be confirmed April 12-15th. The pups are expected to be born May 16-18th.

Lita-Bug: The daughter of Chinka and DaVinci is better known as “Little Mama” at Happy Kennels due to her nurturing and protective personality towards puppies. Lita decided this season to let down her pig tail and have her first spring fling. Her new beau is a strapping young pied stud with a big head, wide frame and short stature. She is a short and broad-shouldered brindle. So, with her body build we are expecting 4 pups with big heads, wide chest, short legs and pied markings. If your looking for a puppy with the current AKC standard “bully” look or find the pied markings attractive, then be sure to contact me to be put on the reserve list. Due to the small litter size and the pied markings, I don’t imagine having these pups available for long. Her pregnancy will be confirmed April 17-20th. The pups are expected to be born May 22-24th.

Lucky Cooper: He is a 6-month-old red male that is still available. Personally, if I didn’t have enough males already, I would keep Lucky myself. He is the perfect gentlemen with a tranquil disposition. Lucky is cordial, attentive, and dashingly handsome. Lucky isn’t one to jump on the couch and give a ton of kisses. He prefers a more subtle approach, he enjoys sitting patiently at your feet for a good head rub that ends with him cuddling up on your feet. Lucky is incredibly compliant which makes training him super easy. He is potty trained. He is trained to walk on a lead and does not tug or pull. Instead, Lucky is amazing at keeping pace and enjoys taking a leisurely stroll (preferably on the beach). Also, if someone were to want to pet him, he’d immediately sit up proud and tall. Lucky is an amazing Frenchy and would make an awesome new family member. SOLD

Bellagio: Is 5-month-old fawn female. She is our little princess at Happy Kennels. Bellagio is at her best when she is in the spot light with her charismatic personality. She is delighted in engulfing those she loves with dozens of kisses. One of her best qualities is the way she steadily surprises you with these funny little things she will do that can bring a grown person to tears laughing so hard. For example, hiding under linen in the clothes hamper because she see’s her reflection on the wall mirror. Bellagio has a vibrant energetic disposition which kids love having her as a playmate. Despite her high activity level to run and chase a ball with the children. She does know when it’s time to calmly sit to have her hair brushed and nails painted for a tea party. She is potty trained. She is leash trained but she is a princess and prefers to ride in a designer handbag. In addition, she doesn’t mind being dressed up for a night on the town.

Finally, we are changing with this season by restructuring our pricing and breeding tactics. The chart below will show that the early bird gets the worm folks! If you’d like a Happy Kennel discount, then putting down a reserve is the way you want to go. This should come as no surprise to anyone, but I’m doing this because quite frankly taking care of a French Bulldog litter is rather expensive. So, basically the longer I have to hold on to a puppy the more it cost me for shots, meds, vet appointments, food, treats, training and advertising etc. When I have more costs, it forces the price of the dog to increase. Therefore, to avoid breeding a puppy that doesn’t have a home waiting for them. I will be primarily breeding based on the demand of families wanting a Frenchy. To reserve one of French Bulldogs in advance, it reduces unnecessary breeding and costs that allows me to provide better discounts for families wanting a Happy Kennels French bulldog puppy. Please read the chart below and note the asterisks beneath.

French Bulldog Personality

A french bulldog generally has a predisposition to be a happy clownish type personality with a love for humans, while being stubborn and set in their ways. But just like humans, the environment plays key factors. Also like children, bloodline counts. What’s in their DNA? So depending on the age (environmental impact) of the French bulldog and what is in their DNA, tells you what to expect from a French bulldog.

Environmental effects can be positive or negative. Depending on age, the effect will be more pronounced. Most of the time, we do not realize our environment is effecting us or those around us. Most importantly, we do not realize how our behaviors are effecting our environment. Many times with small children or dogs, we think they are not paying attention or understanding. Well they do understand much more than we realize, and they see everything! Their personality is collected from the experiences they incurred from the environment around them.

DNA has more to do with a pup than it’s looks. How healthy a pup is will effect behavior and acquired personality. The bitches happiness while raising the pup is vital. French bulldogs, canines in general and just about every living creature gets its’ basic behaviors from it’s nurturing parent. The time spent with the nurturing parent is just as vital. A French Bulldog learns what it is to be a French Bulldog from the bitch. The environment the bitch/DNA is in when raising the pup will essentially effect the behavior of the bitch and her ability and/or willingness to teach. #frenchbulldogpersonality #frenchbulldogs #frenchbulldogpuppies

French bulldog Health and Standards

French Bulldogs by Gwendolyn Styers

14 years of post graduate studies, I believe I officially have my PhD in French Bulldogs. Already had the BA and AA in supporting education. Did make some major break throughs this year. Aced performing progesterone and pregnancy test. Was able to introduce 2 new healthy Champion bloodlines into my already exclusively protected Championed Bloodline. Further studied how I was actually able to keep and to continue to maintain my French Bulldogs health when introducing the new bloodlines. Unfortunately what I have discovered was much of the desired look for French bulldogs by breeders not completely educated as to why they need the little dip or snout in their French bulldog’s nose and why being overweight/ obese is not healthy are “really important” issues that have been brutal on my beloved French Bulldogs. French bulldogs are suppose to be muscular not fat. There is a difference. Standards that over look a serious health issue are not cute if your baby suffers physically from being cute. PS if you are making serious money from breeding French Bulldogs and your dogs are all heavy with no nose and can’t breath, you are breeding for your wallet with no concern for the well being of the breed or your pups new family.
